On March 25th, it was composed of 18 experts from China University of Science and Technology, China Institute of Atomic Energy, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Institute of High Energy, Institute of Physics, Institute of Physics, Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics and Tsinghua University. The expert group conducted the identification and acceptance of the Chinese spallation neutron source project. After completion, China's spallation neutron source has become China's first and the world's fourth pulsed spallation neutron source, filling the gap in the application of pulsed neutrons in China. It is China's material science and technology, life science, resource environment, and new Fundamental research on energy and other aspects and the development of new and high technologies provide powerful research tools, which are of great significance for meeting the countryâ€™s major strategic needs and solving leading scientific issues.
China's spallation neutron source has achieved a series of major technological achievements in accelerators, target stations, and spectrometers through independent innovation and integrated innovation. The localization rate of equipment exceeds 90%, which significantly enhances Chinaâ€™s relevant industrial technology and independent innovation capabilities in fields such as magnets, power supplies, detectors, and electronics, and has enabled China to achieve a major leap forward in the field of high-current proton accelerators and neutron scattering. Technology and comprehensive performance enter the international advanced equipment of the same type.
The Chinese spallation neutron source was constructed by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The joint institute was the Institute of Physics. It was started in September 2011. The construction period is 6.5 years and the total investment is about RMB 2.3 billion. The main construction includes a linear accelerator. A fast-circulation synchrotron, a target station, and a three-stage neutron spectrometer for neutron scattering experiments are all high-, precision-, and sharp-point devices.
China's spallation neutron source is like a "super microscope" and is a "national instrument" for studying the microstructure of materials. It covers many fields such as materials science and technology, life sciences, physics, chemistry, resources and environment, and new energy. With wide application prospects, it will provide strong support for our country to produce high-level scientific research results, and provide an advanced research platform for solving many bottlenecks of national sustainable development and national strategic needs. The device will become the core unit of the National Science and Technology Industry Innovation Center under construction in Guangdong Province and will make significant contributions to the technological development and industrial upgrading of the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Bay Area.
In August 2017, the Chinese spallation neutron source successfully hit the target and obtained a neutron beam. In November 2017, the acceptance index of the target beam power was reached; during the Spring Festival of 2018, the research personnel worked overtime and continued to perform stressful commissioning operations. During the period, the accelerator was stable in operation, beam power and continuous operation time were the new heights since tuning. The first three neutron spectrometers, namely the universal powder diffractometer, the small-angle scatterometer and the multi-function reflector, all successfully completed the sample experiments. The universal powder diffractometer has completed two high-level user experiments.
After the completion of the spallation neutron source in China, it will give full play to the role of three spectrometers in the fields of materials science, life sciences, condensed matter physics and chemistry, and provide international users with advanced research platforms. At the same time, in order to give full play to the role of the device and meet the urgent needs of neutron scattering research and application users, the expert committee suggested that China's spallation neutron source should reach design targets as soon as possible to achieve stable operation, and start the second phase of the project as soon as possible after the device passes the acceptance. The construction of a follow-up spectrometer was started to further increase the beam power.
